About Fashion and more with Adrian Mizzi
Malta Fashion Week and Awards may be over but one thing is certain the effort such event represents cannot be summarized in a week and there is much preparation happening months and months before the actual events. Here is an interview with the man who made it happen, how it all started and his aspiration for the future.
1. What does it take to organize such a huge event such as Malta Fashion Week?
In a nutshell…Stamina, blood, sweat and tears and the ability to be able to function without sleeping for an extended period of time. On a more serious note, organizing such an event takes a huge amount of energy – it is after all a logistical nightmare and one which can only be successful with the unrelenting commitment from all those involved. No detail can be ignored, regardless of how insignificant this might seem, as this could be the link which either makes or breaks the event. You have to think on your feet all the time and keep your ears to the ground, besides always having a Plan B…and C and D. Preparations start months ahead, but with rigorous planning everything thankfully falls into place at the right time.
2. What was your childhood dream – was it related to fashion?
Believe me, fashion never featured during my childhood years and to be honest at that time fashion was an abstract thing, something that was totally remote on our islands. Fashion events were relatively unheard of, something you watched on TV every now and again, broadcast from far away locations.

3. Do you think you have managed to revolutionize Malta in terms of Fashion and by seeking to introduce new talented designers?
Yes, Malta has seen a fashion revolution during the past few years and I’m proud to say that I have been a pioneer in creating a space for relatively unknown talent enabling them to showcase their work. This has also been the case for other sectors in the industry – photographers, makeup artists, hairstylists, models, bloggers. It is always a bit risky, investing in raw talent but I have always believed that for the fashion industry to flourish, this is the only way forward. Investing only in established artists or designers is a sure-fire way to pull the crowds, however, my idea of promoting the new and untried seems to have taken off, with crowds eagerly anticipating the new designers’ collections, each and every year.
4. How do you see Malta Fashion Week and Awards moving forward in the future?
The fashion industry is evolving every single day and Malta Fashion Week and Awards is no exception. We have proved that we can compete with the rest of Europe, but that is not enough. We will strive to be bigger, better with even more international exposure for our participants, who slowly but surely are making a name for themselves locally and hopefully around the globe in the coming years. This bears fruit not only in the fashion industry itself but immensely contributes towards the tourism sector, creating an affluent niche market as well as creating a base for visitors who want to invest in the country – people who were made aware of what our islands have to offer through this event.
5. How do you go about selecting designers who participate each year as well as those coming from abroad?
Selection of participants is a long and tough process. We strive to be as inclusive as possible with regard to artistry and style without skimping on quality and standard. That said, with regard to new designers, at times the sheer flair and talent might not always be up to the ideal standard, however, we believe that this comes with experience and unless these youngsters are given a chance, their talent will be forever unrecognized. That said, these are given the best possible advice and guidance by the best people who have been in this business for a long time while making sure that their vision is wholly presented. New designers are supported throughout, from the time they commit themselves to well after the event itself.

6. Do you believe Malta has achieved a standard in terms of design and fashion that can be comparable to some well known for its fashion events and designers countries?
We still have some way to go! We have talent which still needs to be explored and youngsters today have much wider horizons than previous generations…Fear is not part of today’s kids’ vocabulary, the world is their oyster and Fashion Week and Awards is the first stepping stone. The missing link in all this is the authorities’ consistent failure to recognize the importance of this sector. I believe that if proper investment and serious financial support was introduced, it would only be a matter of time before we reach these standards. their ticket to the international fashion scene.
7. What do you think about the local style?
I think individuality is on the rise again, people want to stand out by their personal style. Of course, you do get a number of fashion disasters walking our streets, but that is something that is not intrinsic to us – it’s something you find in every city, in every nation. What I know for sure, is that despite our minute size, fashion is an industry that is fast growing, giving vent to huge sectors of the Maltese economy.

8. If it is not a secret who is your favorite designer?
It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of John Galliano. Even after his fall from grace, for me he remains one of the most talented designers the fashion world has ever seen. His innate ability to meld the dramatic with the sensuous is unprecedented, fostering creations of such opulence that even his earliest collections are still relevant today.
9. Is there anything you still have not achieved through Malta Fashion Week and Awards?
Malta Fashion Week and Awards, since inception have been an eye opening exercise, through which I have partly achieved my dream, that of elevating the fashion industry as a whole and giving vent to new talent to be able to flourish. However, I am still chasing the part where fashion is recognized by the people in power for what it is: a huge vehicle which is motoring the economy forward and one which should be given the proper status and funding, in much the same way as arts, sports and other much less popular cultural events.
